In the case of closed courses, third-party material may continue to be used, as this is for the school's own use (Art. 19 para. 1 para. b URG). This no longer applies for a public course.

In courses open to the public, the copyright situation of the individual materials must be clarified first. A work is protected by copyright as soon as it is created. Copyrights are handled differently in every country. There are numerous ways to clear the rights:

• Ask the copyright owner whether and under which circumstances you may use their the work. The purpose of use (which media, geographical extension), type of use (modified, in a video, etc.), the duration of use, and the requirements (sources, costs incurred) should be clarified.
• In some cases, collecting societies administer the rights of use.
• Published works may be cited if the citation serves as an explanation, reference, or illustration, and the scope of the citation is justified by this purpose. The citation and the source must be identified as such.
• There are freely accessible resources (OER) available on the Internet, which are provided free of charge. The conditions under which such a resource may be reused can be determined with Creative Commons licenses.
  If no information on the author is available, it can be assumed that all rights are reserved.
• There are commercial databases that provide materials (e.g. photos or music)  for a fee and subject to defined conditions.

For course administration and further development as well as for research purposes, if necessary, the usage data of the courses can be accessed. This data must be handled in accordance with the applicable data protection regulations. In particular, there must be a permissible reason for processing the data.
